Q:  What is an endowment?
An endowment is a gift to an organization, typically made as part of a personís estate, but a gift can also be made at any time in a personís life. Endowments provide ongoing benefits to Tanque Verde and its members by the allocation of a portion of the Endowment Fundís earned income/interest to fund activities that support the congregationís mission - To Follow Christ and Share His Love - while keeping the endowment principal intact and untouched. Intended uses for the money include, but are not limited to, outreach into the local community, programs within the congregation, ministries within the ELCA.

Q:  How much is TVLCís Endowment Fund?
The invested principal balance is $30,600. The fund has been dormant for many years, and there have been no recent efforts to grow the fund within the congregation.

Q:  Where is the TVLC Endowment money invested?
TVLCís endowment is invested with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Americaís Foundation pooled funds. The ELCA Foundation is designed specifically to assist ELCA congregations in the management of long-term investments, such as endowment funds.
Q:  What does TVLC do with the interest on its existing Endowment Fund?
The congregation recently reactivated its Endowment Fund Committee, 5 members of the congregation and the Lead Pastor, who will review requests for funds up to four times a year and determine which proposals will receive funding and allocate dollar amount within the guidelines set by the Congregation Council (a percentage of the interest income, which may vary from year to year, depending on financial market conditions).

Q:  Why should I consider making a planned gift/leaving an endowment to TVLC or otherwise making a contribution to the Endowment Fund?
An estate or planned gift to TVLC is a tangible way to express your gratitude for God's many blessings.  It can be an expression of your love for TVLC and what our congregation has meant to you and your family. Such a gift offers the opportunity for you to help support ministries of the church and of the community and allow future generations to experience Godís love and grace through TVLC.

Q:  May I specify what my Endowment gift will be used for or how my gift should be used or allocated?
The TVLC Endowment Fundís purpose is set forth in the TVLC constitution. The fund is governed by a committee of congregation members who follow the constitution and procedures for allocating the available funds.
Greg Shepherd is TVLCís Regional Gift Planner.  Before joining the ELCA in 2009, he spent more than 25 years in the financial services industry. He serves as president of the Southwest Chapter of the Association of Lutheran Development Executives. Greg is married to Narcisa, and they have four adult children and 11 grandchildren. Gregís passion is his work for the church and golf. He and Narcisa enjoy traveling and hiking.
Q:  Who can give to TVLCís Endowment Fund?
Anyone. A donor does not need to be a member of our congregation or any Lutheran church.

Q:  Who can help me determine if a planned gift to TVLCís Endowment Fund is the right option for me and my family?
Greg is available to meet with members of the congregation at no cost to review estate gifting plans to heirs and the church. Greg makes periodic trips to Arizona from his California home. You can reach him at gregory.shepherd@elca.org  or 909-910-6823.
