February 8: Leviticus 7-9; Acts 15

SCRIPTURE:

Leviticus 7:25 & 27 Anyone who eats fat from an animal presented as a special gift to the Lord will be cut off from the community…. 27Anyone who consumes blood will be cut off from the community.”

OBSERVATION:

We see in these rules for the people of Israel the harsh consequences of disobedience.  The sin of disobedience is not only between the person and God, rather it cuts them off from the community.

APPLICATION:

We don’t seem to understand our community identity in this way anymore.  I think that the reason this disobedience cuts people off is because our community identity is rooted in our relationship to God.  If we separate ourselves from God through our disobedience, we are then naturally separated from those people who are still in right relationship to God.

PRAYER:

Gracious Father, thank you for making us your children through Jesus Christ.  Help us not to take lightly this gift and to recognize that our oneness as a community of faith is rooted in our right relationship with you as established through the death and resurrection of Jesus. AMEN
